GOP Lawmakers Barred From Checking Prison Conditions for Jan. 6 Inmates

Two days after being denied entrance into the Department of Justice and then chased away by protestors, four Republican lawmakers probing the conditions of the inmates arrested in connection with the Jan. 6 breach of the Capitol have been barred from a facility where some 50 of the prisoners are said to be held.

Reps Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.), Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.), Louie Gohmert (R-Texas) and Paul Gosar (R-Ariz.) showed up at the DC Central Detention Facility the morning of July 29. The lawmakers have been inquiring into reports that those involved in the incursion into the Capitol have been severely beaten, held in solitary confinement, and denied access to evidence about their own cases.

The members of Congress were allowed into the lobby, but were quickly told by a corrections officer that they were trespassing.

“You’re obstructing,” the corrections officer could be heard saying on a live broadcast streamed by the Right Side Broadcasting Network (RSBN).

“My gosh, the government is upside down,” Gohmert said in response.

The corrections officer indicated to the members of Congress that her supervisor would speak to them outside. But when the lawmakers went outside, they found that they were then locked out of the building in what Gaetz called a “bait and switch.” Gaetz attempted to reenter the facility, but was denied—along with an attorney who was trying to enter to see a client.

“The supervisor came down, was standing right here, but she turned her back on me,” Gohmert said of the situation. “The other one won’t talk to me.”

Gohmert said he and his colleagues gave the facility advanced notice that they would be attending—he didn’t say how far in advance—but they never received a response. He said there shouldn’t be anything preventing members of Congress from examining the facilities over which they have oversight, as he has done numerous times in the past.

The GOP lawmakers expressed dismay at what they said were authoritarian tactics displayed by the Department of Justice and Washington DC Department of Corrections.

“We’ve turned a corner. We’re in a totalitarian, Marxist territory here,” Gohmert told RSBN correspondent Liz Willis.

“The federal employees here spent more time taking videos and photos of us than they spent trying to give us the opportunity to do what members of Congress do every month of the year: to review a federal detention facility,” said Gaetz.

“If this is any indication of how they’re treating the prisoners inside, I’m very concerned,” added Greene.

The lawmakers left the facility to go vote on Capitol Hill. Around 1 p.m., they reconvened outside to talk to reporters and others about their experience that morning.

Greene said any lingering doubts she had about the reports of abuse are now removed, and that she’s convinced that the Jan. 6 inmates and other prisoners there are being mistreated.

“I’m not just concerned for the January 6 defendants. I’m concerned for all of the people in that prison,” she said. “Because we showed up, walked in and were told we were trespassing … We vote to fund these facilities!”

Gohmert proposed the idea of defunding federal facilities that don’t accept congressional oversight, and allocating those funds to local jurisdictions to house federal inmates.

The lawmakers’ failed attempt to enter the DC correction facility comes two days after they were also prohibited from entering the DOJ. On the afternoon of July 27, they held a brief press conference to list a number of unanswered questions they have about the January 6 inmates—before being run off by left-wing protestors.

Gohmert said they haven’t heard back from the DOJ since then, bringing their number of unanswered queries to the DOJ and corrections officials to at least seven.

“The AG and the head of the federal bureau of prisons cannot hide forever. Ultimately, if they won’t answer the door when we go to them, then they’re going to have to come to us,” Gaetz said. “That’s how Congress works.

“The longer they delay in answering these questions, the more suspicious it looks.”

Auditors Finish Counting Ballots in Arizona’s Maricopa County

Auditors in Arizona’s largest county on July 28 finished a third count of ballots and will shift to compiling a draft report on the audit results.

Workers overseen by retired auditor Randy Pullen, a former Arizona Republican Party chair, completed the third count at the Wesley Bolin Building on the Arizona State Fairgrounds in Phoenix, according to Arizona Senate President Karen Fann.

“The physical tabulation of the ballots are complete and are being returned to Maricopa County tomorrow,” Fann told The Epoch Times via email.

The data gathered by the auditors will now be taken to their labs for analysis.

Teams led by Florida-based Cyber Ninjas last month finished an initial hand tally of the nearly 2.1 million ballots cast in the 2020 election.

The third set of numbers was needed because the initial recount and the number Maricopa County reported didn’t match, Fann said earlier this month.

Maricopa County’s Board of Supervisors has repeatedly denounced the auditors and Jack Sellers, the chairman of the board, saying that the methods used were “flawed” and would “produce incorrect results.”

In the third count, workers led by Pullen only tabulated the number of ballots, instead of marking down some or all of the votes, which the auditors and the county did.

The third count was done on the advice of the Arizona Senate Republicans’ attorney, according to Fann.

The completion of the physical audit comes after days of tension between Cyber Ninjas and Ken Bennett, a former Republican secretary of state tapped by Fann to serve as the state Senate’s audit liaison.

Every Member of Pelosi’s Jan. 6 Select Committee Voted to Impeach Trump; Most Say He Incited Capitol Incursion

News Analysis

When Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) announced which Democrats were to serve on her Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol on July 1, she told a news conference that the panel’s purpose was “to seek and to find the truth … in the most patriotic and nonpartisan way, so the American people have confidence in the results.”

After Pelosi rejected two of House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy’s five Republican picks to serve on the select committee, whose first hearing was held on July 27, he claimed that the panel had “lost all legitimacy and credibility.”

Pelosi accused Reps. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) and Jim Banks (R-Ind.) of “statements and actions” that would undermine “the integrity of the investigation,” presumably including their votes against the creation of the committee.

In response, Jordan and Banks accused Pelosi of rejecting them because she knew they would demand answers as to why the U.S. Capitol Police, which is under her control, wasn’t prepared for the Jan. 6 breach of the Capitol despite being warned days ahead of time that trouble was brewing.

McCarthy withdrew all five of his nominees, so Pelosi added Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.) as the second and last Republican member of the panel, joining Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.). Both Kinzinger and Cheney voted to impeach Trump following the riot.

All seven Democrats on the select committee also voted to impeach Trump a week after the Jan. 6 breach and to hold him responsible for the day’s events.

That vote was the second to impeach Trump for several of the panel members, including the chairman, Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.). Thompson also sued Trump after the Capitol incursion, claiming he incited it.

Other select committee members are Reps. Elaine Luria (D-Va.), Jamie Raskin (D-Md.), Stephanie Murphy (D-Fla.), Pete Aguilar (D-Calif.), Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), and Zoe Lofgren (D-Calif.).

Raskin was a member of the House impeachment team that presented the case to the Senate for Trump’s responsibility for the riot and helped draft the impeachment articles that were approved by 222 House Democrats and 10 Republicans.

Schiff, as chairman of the House Select Committee on Intelligence, was the leader of the first impeachment campaign against Trump, based on accusations that the chief executive had abused his powers in making U.S. aid to Ukraine contingent upon that country providing negative information about then-former Vice President Joe Biden.

Schiff also claimed to have viewed “direct evidence” that Trump had conspired with Russians to steal the 2016 election from Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton. Schiff has never provided or described any such evidence despite repeatedly claiming to have seen it.

Shortly after casting his vote to impeach Trump, Aguilar issued a statement saying, “When the President sent a mob to the Capitol, radicalized by his lies about the results of a free and fair election, to stop the counting of electoral votes he made it clear that he poses a grave threat to our democracy.”

Lofgren voted to impeach Trump in 2019 and told the House that she would support the second Trump impeachment because “the President incited right-wing terrorists to attack the Congress to try to overturn constitutional government.”

Similarly, Murphy, who voted to impeach in 2019, defended her second impeachment vote against Trump, saying, “The mob was incited by the President.”

With such a makeup of Pelosi’s select committee, two attorneys defending individuals arrested in connection with the Jan. 6 incursion told The Epoch Times on July 26 in a statement that the panel will damage the ability of the more than 500 facing charges to get fair trials.

“These hearings are not an objective search for truth, but rather a deliberate attempt by Nancy Pelosi’s House of Representatives to thwart the judicial process by creating subjective evidence for the Department of Justice to use during January 6th criminal trials and to continue poisoning jury pools beyond repair,” attorneys Joseph McBride and Steven A. Metcalf said.
